NEDMA NEWSNew England Direct Marketing Association
October 2001

To NEDMA Members and Colleagues

In the space of an hour, our community went from hoping mailings got out, to hoping people got out. Our focus turned from the response of a campaign to the response of a nation. Perspectives and priorities changed. Some, perhaps, forever.

On behalf of the board of the New England Direct Marketing Association, let me offer condolences to those who lost loved ones, friends and business associates in September 11's terrible tragedy. And to all of us, who lost our sense of security and normalcy.

The activities of a direct marketing professional group may seem trivial at this time. Our nation's leaders urge us to get back to business, but there's a hollowness in our days. And a restless sleep in our nights. NEDMA will not solve this. But the connectedness and community we offer may temper it. There's camaraderie here. And concern. And support for common goals. And the knowledge that as direct marketers, we will play a significant role in propelling the nation's economy forward. For these reasons, I encourage you to join with us in the coming months. Your presence will make all of us stronger.

Nancy Harhut
NEDMA President

DM Industry Loses A Friend and Nationally- Respected Fundraising Expert

Lee W. Robbins, CFRE, Founder, Past-President, and Senior Consultant of L.W. Robbins Associates and one of the nation's leading authorities on direct mail fundraising passed away suddenly on September 10 at UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

He was a friend and mentor to many young people who wanted to gain fundraising experience. He founded L.W. Robbins in 1970, and over the years, developed a number of techniques that have become standards in the industry. The firm's clients include homeless shelters, a Native American rights group, animal welfare agencies and food banks. He recently appointed Lynn S. Edmonds as president, but was still a consultant to the firm which is a subsidiary of W.A. Wilde Co.

"Lee had a singular devotion to the needs of nonprofit organizations and focused on helping them meet their fundraising needs," said Lynn. "He helped raise millions of dollars on their behalf."

In 1997, he received an Award for Excellence from NEDMA and in 1999 was presented with the NEDMA Direct Marketer of the Year Award.

He will be missed.

NEDMA's November Meeting Gets Right to the Point...to tell you how...

S&H Greenpoints" are Shaping and Changing Customer Loyalty!

Where: Northeastern University Faculty Center

Time: Networking 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM, Dinner & Meeting starting at 6:30 PM

Speaker: Gregg Sullivan, Senior Director of Channel Development

Costs/Registration: Register now using the registration form below.

Remember licking those stamps and putting them neatly...
or not so neatly...in those little savings books?

Sperry & Hutchinson, known to millions as S&H, invented the category 104 years ago with the introduction of S&H Green Stamps. In 1964, they printed three times as many stamps as the US Post Office! And now they have invented the "rewards currency" for the digital economy.

S&H has gone from lick 'em and stick 'em to click 'em!

Join us on November 15, and you'll hear our very own (NEDMA past president) Gregg Sullivan tell us how S&H is using real-time technology to interact with consumers in the real-world.

He'll explain how working closely with retailers, S&H is increasing current customer loyalty and changing future buying habits. And it's all happening at checkout counters, gas pumps, and other places where consumers spend money.

The S&H story is an outstanding example of how a company "reinvented" itself to be at the forefront of advancing technology.

It's an evening you won't want to miss!

Northeastern University's Faculty Center is at 96 The Fenway, Boston (behind Huntington, near the MFA). There is a pay-parking garage nearby.

Directions: Heading inbound on Huntington Ave: Left onto Forsythe Way (1st left after MFA). Follow to end. Right onto The Fenway. #96 is on the right. Faculty Center is inside Kerr Hall. There is a map on Northeastern's web site: www.neu.edu

MBTA: Green, E-Line, Northeastern University T-stop.

Epsilon Acquired by Relizon

The Burlington, MA-based Epsilon has just been acquired by The Relizon Company of Dayton, OH. Details have just been completed as this issue goes to press.

Epsilon will maintain its strong corporate identity and Relizon's eCRM Group will be merged into Epsilon. Epsilon management will be kept intact with Corey V. Torrence continuing as president.

"This is an excellent move for Relizon," said Patricia Howe, VP of Strategic Marketing for Relizon. "Our traditional strength has been in the area of internal business solutions and we needed a strong partner to provide external direct marketing and CRM to reach our customers' customers. We considered more than 300 firms, and when Epsilon was offered for sale, we saw what an outstanding fit this would be." Relizon paid $189 million for Epsilon assets.

Founded in 1969, Epsilon had been owned by DMDA, Inc., and is an exceptionally well known and successful database and direct marketing firm. With 700 employees, it has offices in Burlington, Dallas, TX, and Washington, D.C. Before the acquisition, Epsilon had approximately 100 clients: 30% non-profits such as Special Olympics, National Geographic, and the American Cancer Society, and 70% commercial including Hilton Hotels and Citrix Systems.

"We are very excited about this new opportunity," said Epsilon's EVP of Market Development, Michael Penney. "There will be a lot of cross-sell and upsell opportunities with Relizon's clients, and they will be able to benefit from our DM and database expertise. There are substantial advantages for clients to have one supplier for internal and external communications. Both our companies have the same intense commitment to our customers. And we will benefit from the financial strength of Relizon and its parent company."

Relizon was created in August 2000 when The Reynolds and Reynolds Company sold its Informations Solutions Group (ISG) to The Carlyle Group, one of the world's largest private investment companies, with more than $13 billion in assets under management.

ISG had been an industry leader in the delivery of internal document, billing and marketing solutions and more recently expanded with external customer-focused CRM solutions. The firm has 4,600 employees, 22 manufacturing facilities, 33 business service centers to serve 12,000 clients nationwide. It posted more than $800 million in revenues for fiscal 2000. Combined revenues will approach a billion dollars.

When we talked to Bob, he said he was very busy and loving every minute of it--"our clients are great and the people here are fantastic!"

If you are thinking about getting an advanced degree, you should check out http://grad.mercynet.edu/directmarketing. The 36-credit program is designed to be completed in 18 months.

Red Brick Design reports that they have teamed up with AnVil Informatics, Inc., an emerging leader in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, to redesign the firm's web site and increase marketing awareness.
