Chicklets — No Longer Just a Gum

This year’s conference chair, Gary Lubarsky, posts his thoughts about blogging . . . and why you should attend the NEDMA Spring Conference.

Take it away, Gary!

There I was, in the middle of an email chat between Dianna Huff, who’s orchestrating the conference blog, and Jessica Albon, who was busily building it, when they started throwing around terms like “feedburner” and “chicklets” (not the gum).

Now, I’ve been a direct marketer for a long time and I’ve seen a lot of jargon come and go, but this was new stuff to me.

And that’s when it dawned on me. Despite all my experience, I’m in danger of becoming a resident of Clueless-ville.

Even if I wasn’t chairing this year’s Conference, I’d be making a point to attend, because I can’t think of many things that would be sadder than becoming irrelevant to direct marketing just when everyone seems to be embracing it.

I’ve been waiting a long time for this day to arrive, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let it pass me by just because I’m not up to speed on emerging media, strategies and tactics.

So I’ll be taking in as much knowledge as I can about social media, word-of-mouth, using blogs to market, Web 2.0, and every other used-to-be-fringe marketing tool that is quickly becoming the norm.

If there’s anyone else out there who understands how I’m feeling, let me know. I’d hate to think I’m the only dim one around here. Although, it wouldn’t be the first time for that.

    I spend most of my time on this “Web2.0 stuff” and I still can’t keep up with everything!
